Me and My House — A Devotional on Joshua 24:15

📖 Verse Breakdown

Joshua 24:15 (ESV)
“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

This verse stands as one of the most powerful declarations of spiritual leadership in Scripture. Joshua, now an old man, is addressing the nation of Israel for the last time. He has seen God’s power in Egypt, survived the wilderness, and led the people into the Promised Land. Now he puts a choice before them: Whom will you serve?

His tone is urgent. The culture around them is filled with competing gods and seductive values—not unlike our world today. The people of Israel are being tempted to blend in, to compromise, to forget who they are.

Sound familiar?

As Christian parents in 21st-century America, we’re standing on the same threshold. Our children are growing up in a culture saturated with relativism, moral confusion, and spiritual apathy. Every day, we’re faced with the same question: Whom will we serve?

Joshua doesn’t wait for consensus. He doesn’t say, “Let’s see what the majority thinks.” He doesn’t follow the crowd. Instead, he draws a spiritual line in the sand:

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

This is more than a motto for a farmhouse sign—it’s a covenant. It’s a public stand in a compromising world. It’s a father, a leader, a parent saying, “No matter what others do, I choose to follow God—and I’m leading my family to do the same.”

🪴 What This Means for Us

Joshua’s declaration calls us to intentional spiritual leadership in the home. It reminds us that:

  • Faith is not inherited—it must be chosen.
  • Our homes are not neutral spaces—they are spiritual battlegrounds.
  • God is not asking for part of our loyalty—He’s asking for all of it.

Today, take time to ask yourself:

  • Are we building our home on the Word or the world?
  • Do our daily routines reflect a family that serves the Lord?
  • Are we helping our children see Jesus not just in church, but in everyday life?

This choice isn’t made once—it’s made daily. In how we pray, how we love, how we discipline, and how we model faith.

You don’t have to be perfect—but you do need to be present and purposeful.

🙏 A Prayer for the Day

Lord God,
In a world filled with noise and compromise, help me echo the words of Joshua.
Give me the courage to say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Help me lead with humility, faith, and consistency.
Strengthen my heart when I feel discouraged, and give me grace when I fall short.
May my home be a light in the darkness, a place where Your presence dwells, and a legacy of faith is passed down.
I choose You today, and I ask You to lead my family as only You can.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
