Jesus Is Being Erased from Public Schools: What Now?

Across the United States, Christian parents are sounding the alarm. From textbooks that omit America’s biblical heritage to teachers discouraged from even mentioning the name of Jesus, it’s clear: Jesus is being erased from public schools. But as concerned as we may feel, we must ask—how should we respond?

This article offers a biblical, hopeful path forward for parents who feel the growing pressure of secularism in their children’s education.

The Problem: A Quiet But Steady Removal of Christ

In 1962, the Supreme Court ruled prayer in public schools unconstitutional. Since then, a steady stream of decisions and policies has further pushed Christian expression to the margins of public education. Today, even mentioning Jesus or praying openly can lead to reprimand in some districts.

A recent Pew Research study found that only 31% of public school students say religion is discussed positively in their classrooms. Instead, students are often taught a worldview that excludes God entirely.

For Christian parents, this raises urgent concerns:

  • Will my child be ashamed of their faith?
  • Will they be discipled by secular values rather than biblical truth?
  • Am I powerless to do anything?

The Root Cause: A Battle of Worldviews

At the heart of this issue is not simply school policy—it’s a clash of worldviews. Secularism seeks to remove God from public life, insisting that faith is private and irrelevant to “real-world” matters.

But Scripture teaches the opposite.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7, NIV

True education begins with God. When Jesus is removed from the classroom, so is the foundation for truth, morality, and purpose.

The Biblical Response: Equip, Engage, Entrust

Rather than retreating in fear or reacting in anger, Christian parents are called to respond biblically and wisely. Here’s how:

1. Equip Your Children at Home

The home—not the school—is your child’s primary spiritual formation center.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.” — Deuteronomy 6:6–7, NIV

Create a rhythm of daily discipleship:

  • Morning devotions before school
  • Open discussions about faith and culture
  • Family prayer and Scripture memory
  • Weekly church and youth group involvement

Let your home be the place where Jesus is not just mentioned—but magnified.

2. Engage the School with Grace and Truth

Your voice still matters. Christian parents can:

  • Join the PTA and advocate for religious freedom
  • Support Christian teachers and student-led clubs
  • Know your rights (e.g., students can pray and share their faith under the First Amendment)

Speak truth, but always in love.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt…” — Colossians 4:6, NIV

3. Entrust Your Child to God’s Sovereignty

Ultimately, you cannot control every influence—but you can entrust your child to the One who can.

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” — 3 John 1:4, NIV

Pray daily. Intercede with boldness. Trust that God is faithful to pursue your child’s heart, even in secular spaces.

Real-Life Example: Light in the Hallways

Consider the story of Caleb, a high school junior in Oregon. Though his teachers avoided discussing religion, Caleb felt called to start a lunchtime Bible study with a few friends. It began small, but grew to over 30 students.

His parents supported him through nightly prayer and open conversations about school challenges. Today, Caleb’s faith is stronger—not because his school nurtured it, but because his home prepared him.

Final Encouragement: Christ Is Not Erased from Your Child’s Heart

Secular systems may try to erase Jesus from syllabi and speech, but they can’t erase Him from your child’s heart if He’s been planted there deeply.

The battle is real—but so is the hope.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5, ESV

Don’t retreat. Refocus. Rebuild your home as a center of truth. Raise children who not only survive in a secular world—but shine in it.
